Annotating Texts to Strengthen English Reading Comprehension

English learners often finish a page only to realize they have forgotten the main points. Annotation turns reading into an active process that improves focus, vocabulary retention, and overall understanding.

Mark main ideas and unknown words in the first pass

Underline or highlight the topic sentence of each paragraph and circle words you cannot define from context. Keep marks minimal so the page does not become overwhelming. After finishing the text, look up only the circled words that appear more than once.

Write short questions in the margins

Next to each paragraph, jot one quick question such as “Why did the author mention this fact?” or “What is the result?” This forces you to check whether you understood the purpose of the information. Review the questions after reading to see which ones you can now answer.

Create one-sentence summaries at the end of each section

Stop after every two or three paragraphs and write a single sentence that captures the main point in your own words. If you cannot do this, reread the section once. These summaries become a quick study guide for later review.

Re-read annotations instead of the full text

On the second day, read only your marks, questions, and summaries. This spaced repetition strengthens memory without requiring a full second reading. Adjust future annotations if the summaries prove too vague.

Key takeaways

  • Underline topic sentences and circle repeated unknown words only.
  • Add one margin question per paragraph to test understanding.
  • Write a one-sentence summary after every two paragraphs.
  • Review annotations the next day instead of rereading everything.
